Enlightenment is a term typically used to define a wild Pokémon gaining a more human level of intelligence. During the process of Enlightenment, a wild Pokémon will develop a sense of self, becoming aware of how its actions affect those around it. It may also start to show signs of conscience, empathy and imagination.
It is illegal for a trainer to enter a battle using a Pokémon that has not been Enlightened, and doing so can result in the offending trainer's license being taken from them.
While time inside a
Pokéball is what most commonly initiates Enlightenment, other factors have been known to cause it to happen also, such as
Linking and exposure to
Melecium.
Most, if not all Psychic Pokémon are naturally endowed with traits of Enlightenment.
