Lavender "Tama" Tamakaze has been a Pokémon trainer for about 6 years and knows the area and the Pokémon that inhabit it quite well. She lives near to Professor Oak's relatives and because of this connection has gained chances to work with the professor himself (and his grandson, Gary) on various scientific projects.
