Whirl Islands

From Rebirpedia, the Pokémon Rebirth encyclopaedia.

The Whirl Islands are a small archipelago located south-west of Olivine City. It is thought that at one time, these islands were all joined together, along with Cianwood.

Two interesting points to note about this archipelago are its culture and weather. Main Whirl Islandic trades and traditions are all heavily focused around water type Pokémon, suggesting these islands to have once been entirely Akushan territory. Descendants of the Akusha still preside over some areas of the archipelago today.

Whirl Islands' wind and water currents are just as curious as one another, forming the churning vortexes which gave the archipelago its name. As a result, Corsola are the most prevalent species along the island coasts, being one of the only water Pokémon strong enough to pass around the whirlpools without being sucked in.

A - Red Rock Isle

Scarlet City (4) to the south of the island is the location of the Whirl Cup Colosseum, a water Pokémon sparring competition dating back to Pokélantean times.

Theirs was a culture that valued both strength and peace- like most ancient cultures, they recognized the need to have the strength to fight off their enemies, and engaged in tournaments to test their own strength.

This Colosseum has always been for those with the power of water alone, but has not always been limited to Pokémon battles. Water-type Cho'moken wielders would compete in the tournaments against their fellow humans as well as against water Pokémon.

However, they did not want this Colosseum to become a place of pure aggression and violence, nor for their culture to become overly violent. So that none would get the idea to hold tournaments all the time, the Colosseum was built to sink into the water, and only to rise for one week every three years.

The Whirl Cup is a competition with great historical significance. Winners of this tournament are given the title "Water Pokémon Alpha Omega" which is a title with similar value to that of Pokémon Master,  The overseer of the Whirl Cup is a descendant of the one who founded it, and keeps possession of the Sea Spirit sceptre, an unusual artefact of Akushan origin.

To the north of the island lie Transit Town (1), location of the Hoothoot Express Airfield. and Diglett Village (3).

B - Yellow Rock Isle

Famous for its yellow-coloured stone, used in paving and house building. Because of this, the island's residents particularly like yellow Pokémon. The island relies on many types of Pokémon to power its fishing and farming industries.

Residents located on the coast of (6) Megi City continue the tradition of living in houses built over Corsola nests, with many of them working with shed Corsola horns to create unique pieces of art that have given the island its fame.

North of (5) Ogi City lies the wreckage of the ISS Raspberry. Ferries leave daily from the harbour of this city.

C- Pudgy Pidgey Isle

This tiny island off the coast of Blue Point is often overlooked on many Johtoan maps, and is generally inaccessible by any conventional means. It has been classified as a specialist preserve due to the large Pidgeys that live there. The lack of predation has given these Pidgeys no reason to fly.

D - Blue Point Isle

So named for a large blue-coloured pinnacle of rock which has helped guide sailors to dock at the southern (7) Inland City.

North of the island, on a high peak near to (7) Bluefinland, lies Blue Lagoon, a beautiful large lake. Before the land that was eventually to become the Whirl Islands had risen above sea level, this location was where Chinchou came to have offspring.

Despite the landscape having changed, the Chinchou's preferences have not. As a result, the residents of Bluefinland have taken the responsibility of guiding the newborn Chinchou back to the ocean every year.

E - Silver Rock Isle

Origin of Silver Rock Stone, one of the hardest and most purest substances in the world. Silver Wing jewellery has its roots in folklore, telling of an event that took place 350 years ago. A fishing boat was caught in a sudden storm near Silver Rock Isle, but when all seemed lost, the storm calmed just as quickly. The sailors felt that the mysterious flying Pokémon which dropped one of its feathers over their boat had rescued them from the storm, and since then, people have believed that jewellery shaped like that feather has the power to protect them and bring them good luck. Tourists have to be careful not to be conned by people pretending to sell real Silver Wing charms.

Nearby is a cave passage leading to Ogi Isle

F - Ogi Isle

The more inaccessible parts of this small, fractured island are where Lugia come to raise their young, as the waters around the island are plentiful with the vegetation that young Lugia need.
